The Healthy LGBTI Ageing Project is a new initiative of Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health funded by the Victorian Government’s Diverse Communities Grant to support the mental health and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ people.
What are the Healthy LGBTI Ageing Project aims?
The project aims to:
- Support local service providers working with older people in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges to increase their understanding of the impact of historic discrimination on older LGBTI people.
- Support local services to better meet the mental health and wellbeing needs of older LGBTI people.
- Support older LGBTI people in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges to access services and programs to support their mental health and wellbeing.
Training for Service Providers
As part of Healthy LGBTI Ageing Project, we offer service providers who work with older LGBTI people in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges the opportunity to participate in training by Val’s LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care (part of Rainbow Health Australia). The training is available in person or online and will be provided free of charge. This important training equips staff to recognise, support and affirm older LGBTI people in their care.
Support for Aged Care Services
In addition to training, we offer aged care services who work in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges support to review their current LGBTI-inclusive policies and practices and develop strategies to improve inclusion. This review assists services to meet the aged care requirements about providing culturally safe and inclusive care for older LGBTI clients, residents and families.
Support for Older LGBTI People
We also offer one-on-one assistance to LGBTI people over the age of 60 living in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges to access services and community programs that support mental health and wellbeing and increase social connections.
